Software raid 5 windows 7 hack
Hardware RAID is certainly more efficient, less overhead, more robust and better performing too. I realise none of this is anything like an answer and you probably already know all this if you want software RAID, but I did get my 2 cents worth. Performance must be abysmal with that. I think including it must have been an accident. MessageBroadcast is an IT service provider. Ouch just dont do it. It really doesn't increase reliability. If anything its going to decrease it.
Hardware raid cards are so cheap these days that in reality it would probably save you money in the long run. Shoot they are so cheap buy two raid cards and put one on the shelf just in case the other dies. Software solutions to hardware issues? Just say NO! In big iron, RAID is considered file system level and is software. There is no reason for this to actually be a hardware thing if the software worked the way that it is supposed to. Now RAID I've definitely seen and know of several people with hardware RAID 5 that have seen those same problems.

Last edited: May 14, Joined Feb 19, Messages 18, Johannes Krauser II - Are you sure it's not available in 7? I know I used it before in 7, but maybe it was Pro, it's been a long time ago. Go Into Disk Manager, scroll down and in the bottom pane, click Disk 0 or Disk 1 and right click on one of the drives on the far left box, does it say "New Raid-5 Volume" possibly grayed out?
It's greyed-out, and stays grayed-out. Win7 and server 08 have the same gui and menus, but the actual volume manger is different. That's why there is the grayed-out option.
Blue Fox [H]F Junkie. Joined Jun 9, Messages 11, Windows 7 does not support creating software RAID 5 arrays. You may be able to work around this by creating a RAID5 array under Windows Server and then transfering the disks to your Windows 7 machine. B00nie said:. It's exactly the opposite. Software raid is your worst option. Get a real RAID card with it's own chip and you can transfer it from computer to another with no problem.
A software raid requires drivers and is installation dependent where a hardware raid is totally transparent to the OS, it's just another drive. Are you sure? Software RAID 5 in win7 pro? Any disk you want included in your RAID you need to delete them from the top area of disk management. Once they are deleted you should only be left with disks you do not want included in the RAID. The other disks will still be there but they will show up in the lower pane and show their spaces as unallocated.
Instead they use spanned, striped, and mirrored as the options for creating software RAIDs. Thanks to the commenters for pointing that out. A spanned volume will create a single partition that will literally span all of the included disks whereas a striped volume will deliberately break up files across multiple disks in an attempt to improve read and write performance. In both cases there is no redundancy so you need to create your own backups.
A mirrored volume and RAID 5 both have some redundancy but you lose storage space to create the parity files needed for recovery. Click next and then select which disks you want included in your new volume a. The final step just reviews all of your settings before the disks are formatted and the new volume is mounted. Finally the disks will be formatted and once the drive is mounted you should be welcomed with the familiar AutoPlay prompt.
If you browse to Windows explorer you should also see that the new volume has the combined storage space of the three individual disks used to create it. Use Google Fonts in Word. Ultimately this will have Hyper-v with 1 Domain Controller and 1 fileserver. I don't think Software RAID 5 is recommended for a Production setup with Server ; that's probably why you can't find any info on it. Stay away from software RAID. If you still want to create software RAID, see link below. Thank you for the feedback. Then what would be a suggested setup.
The server will run Hyper-v, with 1 domain controller and a file server. We have a 64gb Ram and 3 x 4tb drives. But can change hardware if needed. Software RAID parity is even worse. And Windows-based one is probably the worst thing you can build since the performance of the parity in Storage Spaces is abysmal. Brand Representative for StarWind.
