Norton slowing down pc
Now that you know the different reasons that may cause your device to slow down, here are 3 ways to speed it back up:. If you have too many programs or apps running in the background, your system will naturally slow down. This is because they are constantly using processing power. This can cause your computer to be very slow over time, taking up essential memory. Your computer should run significantly faster by deleting unnecessary files such as bloatware, preinstalled trials, and junkware.
Failing to update your operating system can cause your computer to slow down. To verify that issue, you can run an antivirus scan. As for the antivirus tool, you can use Windows Defender , Norton, Avast, etc. Sometimes, your computer is slow because of its hardware, for example, the CPU is not good, the RAM is small, the hard drive is not an SSD, the hard drive has bad sector, etc.
Therefore, you should check whether the computer is still slow, after uninstalling Norton. If you have tried the above methods and make sure that Norton slows down your computer, you can read the following content to know how to solve the problem.
It may be common to almost all antivirus programs that an antivirus program is incompatible with another one. They will cause scanning conflicts or consumption of a large amount of system memory. Norton is in such a case. Norton security will slow down the system performance if any other antivirus program is installed on the computer system. In this case, you should disable or uninstall the other antivirus program.
I haven't tried OpenOffice or LibeOffice so I can't speak from personal experience, but I investigated a few free Office suites and thought LibreOffice was the better choice for me. There's a good YouTube video at LibreOffice vs. It has very good support in "manual" form if you click on HELP on the toolbar at the top -- or use F1.
I've used the online version rather than install it and be nagged to update it probably. I'm not an expert on it and I just use it for the very occasional letter or more frequently I use its Spreadsheet to keep track of our monthly income and expenditure. Thank you Imacri and huwyngr for the information.
On the otherhand I did proceed with checking my startup applications on the Task Manager, and I was surprised: NO one startup program found all are disabled anyway there are few around 10!! I will proceed in doing more checking on the WE. Thank you very much for all notes and hints. Do you mean that everything is disabled at Settings Apps Startup, including your Windows Security notification icon? If you want to post a screenshot of the Startup tab of your Task Manager i.
For example, I can see Mozilla Maintenance Service listed under "Necessary" so I'm guessing you have a Firefox browser installed, but there's nothing in those screenshots to tell us if services and executables for important programs like your Norton antivirus are launching correctly at boot-up. Many Win 8. I'm not qualified to interpret these FRST diagnostic logs and these logs shouldn't be posted publicly in this Norton forum , but you might find some useful information there, including a list of all your installed programs, recent Event Log and System errors, etc.
A trained malware removal specialist should be able to recognize any process, registry entry or startup task associated with malware in those diagnostic logs and, if necessary, provide a script that will automatically clean your machine.
Any logs posted in that Malwarebytes board can only be viewed by authorized users like the trained malware removal specialist assigned to your case. This might be completely unrelated to your problem, but I just noticed that there are a few users posting in the Norton for Windows board about the Norton executable NortonSecurity. You might want to monitor the following threads just in case there's a bug in the latest version of Norton.
For example, here's what the first few entries in my Processes tab typically looks like sorted by CPU Thank you for this very important hint , for me I used to do this, assuming when I start later it will do the changes anyway! Rab During the discussion I had difficult time postin screen shots or images, is there any tutorial for this topic , so I can easily do it in the future?
Going forward, here are four basic tips that might help if you ever suspect that your Norton antivirus is affecting computer performance. If you have ever had another antivirus installed on your computer like Avast, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, McAfee, etc. This will ensure that any stray files or registry entries left behind by the uninstaller are cleaned off your system and can't interfere with Norton. Most Norton users in this forum who purchase a subscription for Malwarebytes Premium the advanced product that includes real-time protection report that Malwarebytes Premium can run in real-time protection mode along with Norton without causing problems, but some Malwarebytes Premium users prefer to create mutual scan exclusions in both products to avoid possible conflicts.
This advanced "Remove Only" mode does a better job of removing your Norton files and registry entries and gives you a cleaner reinstall than running the NRnR tool in "normal" mode. On rare occasions the advanced "Remove Only" mode still isn't sufficient and you must manually scrub the last traces of Norton off your system before reinstalling.
If you see a significant drop in connection speeds with Norton Secure VPN enabled and a clean reinstall of Norton doesn't help see tip 3 then you will have to choose between security versus speed. Thank you very much for the additional information. As mentioned before I will slowly will do all I can from your recomended cleaning tasks. For example, I use Macrium Reflect Free to create full disk images for emergency recovery, and I've added the Macrium rescue environment to my Windows boot menu.
That means that I see a prompt every time I boot up my computer that asks me to choose if I want to boot into Windows normally the default after a 10 second countdown if I'm away from my computer or if I want to interrupt my boot-up and perform an emergency recovery.
Not every installed program is listed for example, the load time for my Malwarebytes Premium anti-malware isn't on that list of startup programs but the "CPU at Startup" column does show that my Waves MaxxAudio application and the Epson software that manages the wireless connection to my Epson printer have a relatively high impact on my startup time.
For a deeper dive of your startup processes, Microsoft Systinternal's Autoruns utility shows nearly everything that loads automatically on your computer, including programs, services, automated tasks, etc. If you click on the Options menu of this tool you can hide Windows and Microsoft entries to reduce the clutter in the interface. Don't delete or alter anything unless you really do know what you are doing or you may crash your computer.
Before you change anything make a backup image of your system onto an external storage drive so that you can recover to where you were when the system won't start up anymore.
For a backup device unless you have one already I'd suggest getting an external hard drive that plugs into a USB socket on the PC. Just checking Amazon to get an idea:. Some hard drives on Amazon just now Don't forget you may need a USB cable if you do not have a spare already although some may come with one.
Macrium Reflect Free Don't get the trial of the "full version" -- the basic free version does all that most of us need! It's not hard to use and can save your sanity when not if things go wrong!
I find it very useful that having saved an image of my hard drive I can in fact dig down into that image and find a file or folder and look at it or recover it on its own. You may be using the cloud, as others call it, but you will find it very slow to save or to recover the backup you have made that way.
Before you change anything make a backup image of your system onto an external storage drive so that you can recover to where you were when the system won't start up anymore More good advice from huwyngr. As you work your way through the some of the suggestions posted in this thread you might want to post a screenshot of the Startup tab of your Task Manager so we know what Startup programs are actually disabled. Post back if you need more help posting images in the forum. Following your advice, I did download this application and would love to use it asap , but I do have some questions regarding the HOW to Do!
Hi lmacri,. This is what I found in the Task manager , Not realy many and all disabled! I think I would start a new thread with Macrium Reflect in the title -- that way some others may be helpful. Before you do that do install it from your download -- it won't do more than look at your system and draw you a picture of how your drive s look.
Then look on the top toolbar, at the right, click on Help which will drop a list of items and the first Help there will take you to the Macrium website where they have a very complete and easy to follow "book" of help topics.
So look at a few of those. Apart from that and telling it to go ahead there's not much else you need to know IF you have an external USB hard drive to save to. I let it use its defaults although I make sure I understand where it says it is saving to I make a folder on that drive and name it eg: Macrium Images Other than this I find more, if I use ccleaner, where different Programs can be liste also What is the make and model of your computer, when did you purchase it, and did it ship from the factory with a bit Win 10 Pro OS?
As far as I know CCleaner's Tools Startup feature only displays information about "legitimate" third-party software installed on your hard drive so I doubt it would show any suspicious or malicious processes running in the background if your computer is infected with malware.
I occasionally use CCleaner Free to run a custom clean of my temporary files and folders and perform few other simple tasks, but I've tried to report bugs in some of those CCleaner tools without much success see my Jan bug report CCleaner v5. That said, I noticed that your CCleaner Tools Startup Windows Services tab for your third-party software is quite short and doesn't list many services related to your hardware components I was expecting to see a few more more Intel programs and other hardware-related software running in the background on your computer, especially if you automatically connect to the internet when you boot up your computer.
Norton Guru SoulAsylum has far more expertise in this area than I do so hopefully they will jump back into this thread and provide some insight. This information really isn't of any use to you because we have completely different hardware configurations, antivirus programs, and third-party software. Back to top. According to the results — which is the collective output from many devices, Norton has received a score of 5. It means that Norton does not cause much slowing down to majority of installed PCs.
However, according to the results, it does not cause much issues in launching of popular websites or start-up of frequently used apps. Therefore, summing these up, we can say that Norton Antivirus has minimal impact on performance of your PC and installed programs. As said earlier, many factors can cause PC slow-down. The easiest thing you can do is to disable Norton Antivirus for a particular period of time.
We recommend a reboot after you have disabled the antivirus program. After rebooting, check whether there is a noticeable decrease in the slow-down. If there is, it means that Norton Antivirus is a reason why your computer is facing slow-down issues. Otherwise, you are good to go. Well, have you found that Norton is really the issue behind slow-down?
